Plans have been submitted for a huge new development in Canary Wharf which includes a massive residential tower by Herzog & de Meuron.
The cylindrical skyscraper is one of five, first phase buildings revealed as part of Allies and Morrison’s newly revised masterplan for Wood Wharf in London’s Docklands.
The eight hectare scheme moves on Farrell and Partners’ masterplan for the site – itself a replacement Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ proposals which were abandoned after Canary Wharf Group won full rights to develop the land last year.
Stirling Prize-winners Stanton Williams are also working on the initial stage of the project which includes 884 homes, 20,000m² of office space, more than 100 new shops, restaurants and cafés.
Commenting on the plans, George Iacobescu, chairman and chief executive of Canary Wharf Group, said: ‘The revised masterplan will create a strong and complementary mix of uses, and provide new homes, offices and retail spaces set within a network of streets and public spaces, designed to support the social life of new residents, employees and the surrounding community.
It is a reflection of the demand we are seeing in the market, and is an opportunity for us to further expand the appeal of Canary Wharf by creating a new and exciting mixed use neighbourhood at Wood Wharf which will offer greater diversity and amenity and a richer urban fabric for the fast emerging City Centre of Canary Wharf.’
A planning application was submitted today (10 December) to Tower Hamlets council after 12 months of ‘extensive public consultation’.
